Cranial Prosthesis

What is a cranial prosthesis?

A hair prosthesis (or cranial prosthesis) is a custom-made wig specifically designed for patients who have lost their hair as a result of medical conditions or treatments, such as alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, or any other clinical disease or treatment resulting in hair loss.
Although the term “wig” will probably not appear, a “cranial prosthesis” or extra-cranial prosthesis” may be covered. If your policy does not cover prostheses, it will not cover a wig.
Because wigs for cancer patients and other health conditions are not for cosmetic purposes, they may qualify for reimbursement covered by your health insurance. Many private insurance companies now cover all or some of the cost of a medical wig as long as you have a prescription.
Procedure Code for the wig from your insurance provider (A9282 and 99199 are the most commonly used codes) Receipt paid in full as proof of payment. Rx with your diagnosis code from your doctor. It must be written for a Medical Hair (or Cranial) Prosthesis, not a wig.
